FF1600 driver races to Lands End

Chris Chisnall, a regular in Class A of the Avon Tyres Northern Formula Ford Championship had to miss the Anglesey double header at the end of June, although he had a perfect reason! He and two friends were busy cycling from John O’Groats to Lands End to raise money for the Motor Neurones Disease Association (MNDA). Having now recovered from the long ride Chris sent us the following report of his adventure...

At 4:42hrs on Wednesday 7th July 2010 Jonathan Parker, Chris Chisnall & Steven Prime arrived in Lands End, successfully completing 906.1 miles since leaving John O’Groats 13 days earlier. The trip however was not without its ups and downs; on day one only 2.9 miles in, Jonathan had a much too friendly encounter with the highlands tarmac when his heavily overloaded bike decided to throw him off. He sustained minor injuries to his elbow and hip but with the help of a very kind passing Italian family in a campervan we were able to continue without too much of a delay.

The first few days took us down the east coast of Scotland to Inverness where we headed along the Caledonian Canal following Loch Ness & Loch Lochy to Fort William taking us through some of Scotland’s most impressive landscapes. We arrived in Fort William on 27th June just in time to catch the 2nd half of England’s defeat to Germany in the World Cup. Surrounded by what seemed like dozens of very ecstatic Scots we decided to retire swiftly to the camp site.

For the next portion of the trip we were joined for 3 days by our Dads. They arrived just south of Kendal and were to keep us company over the next 3 days and 210 miles, all the way to Chepstow. We travelled down the A49 taking us right through Warrington where we arrived to a massive welcome from our family, friends and members of the North West MNDA. For the final leg of the trip we travelled South West through Bristol down towards Devon then through to the final county, Cornwall, as the miles counted down and we allowed ourselves to dream of the finish line. Cornwall decided to throw some of its steepest hills at us; the A30 is a harsh mistress. Our efforts were rewarded on the 7th July when we arrived at our final destination, Lands End. Elated at finishing, our tiredness gave way to the celebration and pride in completion of our adventure.

Thanks to all the generous donations from family and friends we have exceeded our sponsorship target and have so far raised well over £3,500. It’s not too late to make a donation to the MNDA just Click Here

MOTORSPORT NEWS - Road to the Festival

The most successful Formula Ford 1600 driver in the country will earn a free entry into October¹s Formula Ford Festival in a new challenge created by the British Racing and Sports Car Club and Motorsport News.

MN will collate driver rankings for the category by awarding points for every FF1600 race in the UK this season. The racer at the top of the standings on Monday, October 4 will earn the £295 prize. The competition will be called the Motorsport News Road to the Festival.

Drew Furlong, the BRSCC Competitions Director, endorsed the initiative. He said: “We see the Motorsport News Road to the Festival rankings as a very positive move. Anything that engenders more interest in the category has got to be good news. It will certainly enable the Kent-engined community to keep up to date with who is doing what in the various regional championships across the UK.”

Australian Jordan Skinner, who is taking part in a number of championships this season, leads the current rankings. Don Hardman runs Skinner's car and he said the prize would help generate more interest in the October 16/17 Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch: “Kent Formula Ford is one of the most popular categories across the country. This will bring everyone together and will highlight who the big players are going to be when we get to the Formula Ford Festival. It's a great idea.”

Current points leader Skinner, 19, added: “It's going to be a great incentive for everyone to keep pushing throughout the year and it's another thing to win, which is what all drivers want. I hope I can maintain my position at the top.”

Keith Jones

It was with great sadness that the BRSCC learnt this morning of the sudden death of Keith Jones. Keith aged just 56, passed away yesterday at his Birmingham home.

Keith was a great servant to the BRSCC for more than 40 years having joined the Club as a marshal after attending a Midland Centre meeting at Mallory Park in 1970. Over the years Keith’s unbounded enthusiasm saw him take on and fulfil many vital roles for the Centre including Rescue Unit Crew Chief, Committee member and Chief Marshal. He also served as a Trustee of the Motorsport Safety Fund from 1986 until his untimely death. In 2004 Keith trained to be a Clerk of the Course and duly became a National B Clerk and officiated regularly at BRSCC club meetings. In more recent years Keith was closely associated with SRO’s F3/GT package working predominantly as the Safety Car Observer but also helping out wherever an extra hand was needed.

BRSCC Chairman Bernard Cottrell said “This is a very sad day for the Club and for me personally as he was a close friend. Keith was dedicated to motorsport and took on whatever role the Club asked him to. His energy, enthusiasm and sense of humour will be sorely missed by all his friends and colleagues at the BRSCC and throughout motorsport”. The BRSCC and the Formula Ford community would like to extend their deepest condolences to Keith’s two daughters and grandchildren.

JAMES BECKETT AND AVON TYRES COMMIT TO CLUB FORMULA FORD

The BRSCC’s Club Formula Ford Championship has received a double boost this week with news of sponsorship support from Avon Tyres and that influential Formula Ford ‘guru’ James Beckett is joining the championship in the role of overall co-ordinator.

Avon Tyres has put their name to both the Northern and Southern divisions of the Club Formula Ford Championship, having of course been the controlled tyre for many years. Roger Everson, the Sales & Marketing Manager for the Avon Tyres Racing Division said, “Our tyres are synonymous with Formula Ford so we are delighted to support the marque’s leading entry level championship.”

BRSCC Competitions Director, Drew Furlong, added “This has been a great week for Club Formula Ford as we build up to next week’s Autosport Show. It is very encouraging that Avon Tyres has shown great faith in the championship and with James working together with our current regional co-ordinators we are very confident that the 2010 season will be a successful one for all concerned.”

James Beckett commented “This is a natural progression from working with the BRSCC on the Formula Ford Festival and I was pleased to be approached by the Club to work with them on their Formula Ford 1600 projects. My passion for Formula Ford has been well documented, and my aim is to further enhance and develop the category through all the BRSCC regions.”

NEW LOOK CLUB FORMULA FORD

The BRSCC has today confirmed plans for a new look for our Club Formula Ford Championships for the 2010 season.

For the new campaign a number of changes to current format will be implemented including a revision of the title. The Championship will be called the BRSCC Club Formula Ford Championship and will consist of three divisions; Northern, Southern & National.

Within the Northern and Southern divisions there will be concurrent mini championships for the Champion of Oulton, Star of Anglesey and Star of Mallory. The National Division will run as one class meaning there will be no separate Pre 90 Cup

Having reviewed the grid numbers for 2009, the BRSCC has made the decision that there will not be separate grids in the Northern Division for Post 89 and Pre 90 cars. However, this decision will only be applicable for 2010, with a further review taking place regarding the format for 2011

In an effort to help reduce costs, a limit of 4 sets of tyres per competitor for the season will be enforced, irrespective of whether a driver races in all or just one division

As last year, Ian Smith will co-ordinate the National Division and Matt Hawkins the Northern Division. They will be joined by Paul Smith who takes on the role of co-ordinator for the Southern Division.

The BRSCC is aiming to release a provisional calendar for the Club Formula Ford Championships in the next few weeks

17 November 2009

At last . . . . . .

Scott Malvern confirmed 2009 Webcon UK

National Club Formula Ford Champion.

The Webcon UK National Championship contenders were present at Mondello Park for the prestigious Leinster Trophy meeting in the middle of September. The final two rounds of the championship were set to decide the season long battle between Rory Butcher and Scott Malvern. With dropped scores coming into play after the Saturday race – which Scott won with Rory a net second behind Noel Dunne – the scenario was quite clear for Sunday’s title decider. Whoever finished ahead of the other would be Champion. There was a great expectancy hanging over the Co Kildare track at twelve minutes past three on the Sunday afternoon. The showdown was about to unfold.

As has been reported in the specialist media and on various websites and driver blogs, the classic showdown did not happen. [We had to wait until the Brands Hatch Formula Ford Festival for that]. On the second corner of the first lap, there was contact between the two title contenders. Both drivers continued. In a nutshell, Scott pulled off into retirement on lap five and Rory took the chequered flag some four laps later, by 5.838 secs from Stephen Daly.

So that was it, an unsatisfactory finish to six months of enthralling Formula Ford racing and Rory Butcher was the 2009 Webcon UK National Formula Ford Champion. Or was he?

The next few hours saw both drivers and their teams climbing and descending the steps to Race Control and the Stewards Room. Each protested the others driving. Scott’s protest was upheld and Rory was excluded by the Clerk of the Course. Rory’s protest against Scott was declined. Both drivers then appealed these decisions to the Stewards. Rory again lost his case against Scott, but was successful in his own appeal and was reinstated in the results, so yet again he was champion, but not for long.

Scott’s team decided to take the matter to the next level and a Motorsport Ireland Tribunal was held on 12th November in Dublin. We believe the tribunal lasted for more than six hours and the decision wasn’t announced until the following morning.

So two months after the race meeting itself, the court ruled in favour of Scott.

Email Notification from: Motorsport Ireland 13 Nov 2009

Scott Malvern's Appeal upheld, so Rory Butcher returns to being excluded from Formula Ford 1600 Race 2 at Mondello Park on 13.9.09

Paul Phelan, Motorsport Ireland

So it is now official, Scott Malvern is the 2009 Webcon UK National Formula Ford Champion on 221 points and Rory Butcher finished runner up on 211 points.

There was never much between Butcher and Malvern all year. The very first qualifying session of the season at Anglesey saw them separated by a scant 0.019 seconds and it seemed like their cars were just one eight wheeler for the rest of the season, with each taking a turn in the lead.

The BRSCC would like to congratulate Scott on becoming a champion in his first season of car racing and commiserate with Rory on losing out at the last. No matter what did, or didn’t happen on track, both drivers fully contributed to a splendid season of National Formula Ford racing.

BUTCHER TAKES FESTIVAL SPOILS

After a splendid season long battle in the – still to be decided - Webcon UK National Club
Formula Ford Championship, the two title aspirants finished the Formula Ford Festival just
0.069 seconds apart after 25 scintillating laps of the Brands Hatch Indy Circuit.
The Festival is the Blue Riband event of the Formula Ford 1600 calendar and the winner has
often gone on to great success in this sport. This was amply demonstrated yesterday when
two previous Festival winners stole the show in Brazil. Mark Webber the 1996 winner won the
Brazilian GP but that was largely overlooked as the1998 Festival winner Jenson Button
secured the F1 World Championship and became the first Festival winner to achieve “the big
one”. Back at Brands Hatch, two young drivers from opposite ends of the country saw off the best
that Ireland and the USA could throw at them. Rory Butcher from Kirkcaldy in Fife was
allocated to heat two and watched Ilford’s Scott Malvern comfortably win heat one. The roles
were then reversed as Scott watched Rory triumph in heat two. The qualifying format saw them kept apart in the Semi Finals, where each secured wins to line up on the front row of the Final in their first direct contact of the weekend. From the lights, Rory ‘stormed off’ and was one to one and a half seconds to the good until about lap thirteen, when Scott started to reel him in. Lap 19 and Scott had the gap down to just 0.079 sec. Lap 20 saw the Safety Car deployed and when racing resumed, there were just three laps to the flag. Scott attacked, Rory defended and the gaps were: Lap 23 - 0.111sec; Lap 24 - 0.086sec and at the end of lap 25, Rory took the flag by a scant 0.069sec. Formula Ford, as
usual, delivered and the BRSCC’s National title contenders were the ones to do it.

Club Formula Ford wishes to congratulate both drivers on an exciting season and wishes
them both well in whatever direction their careers take them in 2010 and beyond.

This sentiment is echoed by Ford Racing UK's Kevin Shortis.

FROM : SCOTT MALVERN’s DAD
Hi everyone,
Just to let you all know that Scott has now updated his blog on Driver Database see
http://www.driverdb.com/drivers/12729/ or http://www.driverdb.com/blog/Scott-Malvern/
after a fantastic weekend at the Formula Ford Festival. He came heartbreakingly close to
snatching a victory from what at one time looked to be an unbridgeable gap to event winner
Rory Butcher and but for a safety car intervention would have likely pulled it off. He was
beaten by the closest of margins; just 0.069 of a second and set fastest lap of the race.
The event itself due a large crowd who witnessed some fantastic racing in the October
sunshine. It was a great advert for the organisers The British Racing & Sports Car Club and
James Beckett who also organises the other great end of season Formula Ford event The Sir
Walter Hayes Trophy at Silverstone which takes place over the weekend of 30th October-1st
November. The final entry is expected to top the 100 mark and so far Scott is not one of
them! This would be a great opportunity for Scott to showcase his talent once more and he'd
most likely be one of the leading contenders having won a National FF1600 race at
Silverstone in June. He just needs to put a budget together to do it! If any of you or anyone
you know is in a position to help in anyway, no matter how small, then please get in touch!!
Many thanks to everyone who came along to support Scott over the weekend; we really do
appreciate it, especially Lynne Baines & Shane Herriot, Mike & Shirley Sandys, David Baker
(thank you very much for the excellent pictures) The Selby's and Mark Gee and family.
Those of you who have witnessed Scott in action this year will agree that it has been a
remarkable first season and we really hope that we can continue this adventure in 2010 and
beyond. He has the talent, the right temperament and the dedication. He just needs the
funding!

LEGENDARY 'KENT' FORMULA FORD ENGINE TO BE REBORN IN THE USA PLUS
NEW 110PS DURATEC 1600cc ENGINE NOW AVAILABLE FOR FORMULA FORD
OWNERS

UK, October 16, 2009 –

Ford is to throw a lifeline to thousands of historic Formula Ford
racers worldwide thanks to a decision to put the legendary 'Kent' engine block back into
production. Engineering work has already begun at Ford Racing?s Performance Parts
division in the USA, with sales scheduled to start in 2010.

The 'Kent' engine began its production life 50 years ago, and was the perfect choice of
power unit when Formula Ford was created in Britain in 1967. Though the engine was
superseded at the top level of Formula Ford racing in the UK in 1993, between 5000 and
7000 'Kent'-engined cars are competing around the globe and engine parts are becoming
increasingly scarce.

Now expertise gained by Ford Racing Performance Parts through its remanufacturing of
classic Ford road car engine blocks, like that for the original Mustang, is to be put to good use on the 'Kent'. “Our parts division has many years of expertise in re-making blocks,” says Ford Racing Engineering Supervisor Andy Slankard, “and we are going to take our knowledge of modern techniques to remanufacture the 'Kent' block and improve its durability. Our aim is not to make performance gains but to strengthen it and to make the unit more reliable. “There are many thousands of 'Kent'-engined Formula Ford cars still racing around the world – particularly in the USA, which never adopted the Ford Zetec engine which replaced it in Europe – and we believe that the majority of owners of these historic machines will want to retain the originality of their car by using a genuine Ford engine.” The news is welcomed by Mike Norton, Motorsport Manager Ford of Europe: “It is fantastic news that the legendary 'Kent' engine is to be reborn. This engine powered some of motorsport?s greatest names to their first championship successes – drivers like Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Nigel Mansell and Mika Hakkinen – and we very much hope that the plan to remanufacture the unit will lead to even more names being added to the list of Formula Ford greats in future seasons.”
New Duratec 1600cc, 110 PS engine. Another alternative for Formula Ford owners is the launch of an all-new version of the Ford Duratec 1600cc engine, offering 110 PS. This engine is designed to complement the highly successful 155 PS Duratec unit, the engine which since its introduction in 2006 has powered Formula Ford back into the single-seater limelight. The new Duratec 1600cc 110 PS engine, which has been in development for the last 12 months, will be available from the end of 2009 with a price tag expected to be around £5,000. The new engine can be fitted into new Formula Ford chassis, or in older cars as a replacement for the 1600cc Kent or Zetec 1800cc engines.
“The new power unit will be ideal for fitment in new chassis; it will be a stepping stone to the more powerful Duratec engines used in the MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain and other series worldwide,” says Norton, “and the engine will be made available throughout world, from the US to Europe, Australia to Africa.” The highly robust and efficient 1.6 litre Duratec engine, as used in the Ford Focus and Ford
Fiesta road cars, has proven a very successful race engine in Formula Ford championships around the world.

The 2009 Webcon UK National Club Formula Ford Championship to be decided by the Irish judicial system.   The final rounds of this years championship were held at Mondello Park this weekend. After a very competitive season, the championship hinged on the results of the very last round to see whether Rory Butcher or Scott Malvern would be crowned champion. Basically whoever finished ahead would take the title. After early race contact between the pair, Malvern retired from the race a few laps later and Butcher took the flag. But all was not clear cut. Each driver protested the other. Rory's protest was thrown out, but Scott's was successful and Butcher was excluded from the results. Each driver appealed their respective protest outcomes. The appeal against Scott's driving was denied, but Rory won his and was reinstated in the results - albeit temporarily - as this decision was subsequently appealed to the next level. The deliberations on the above will be held at a Motorsport Ireland Tribunal in the next few weeks. [Motorsport Ireland being the Irish equivalent of the MSA]

WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?

Last Saturday, Paul Crosbie decided to sample son Dougie's Van Diemen RF00 from the cockpit. This was to be Paul's competition debut and a two lap sprint meeting at Anglesey National Circuit was chosen. Paul was sure none of the Club Formula Ford North West crew would ever find out about his top secret exploits. WRONG.

Unfortunately for Paul, the Anglesey Performance Driving Centre were running a school on the Club Circuit that day and a lot of the staff were part of the aforementioned Club Formula Ford North West crew. Also, Neil Lambert - the tracks resident photographer - was asked to supply photographic evidence.

The practice run saw Paul only 0.05 sec slower than his son. Dougie however had had a “spin and continue” moment, but Paul milked that for all he was worth.

Come the three timed runs, all of Dougie's times were in the 117 sec bracket. Dad creditably improved each time out with runs of 135.66 sec; 129.89 sec and 127.42 sec. And the car survived to be on the grid for the 12th September Creative LED Solutions race. So whatever people try to do with their FF1600, there is a fair chance that www.ClubFormulaFord.Info will be there to capture the moment.

Formula Ford Carnival - Castle Combe -

Saturday, October 03, 2009

The entry fee is a discounted £175, and the event will consist of a 15 minute qualifying practice session, 10 lap heat race and 15 lap final.  Subject to final entry levels the fastest few drivers in qualifying may get a pass straight into the final.

Entry Form: http://www.castlecombecircuit.co.uk/events/display_event.asp?EventID=165

Testing is available on Thursday 1st October in pre-booked 30 minute sessions, £80 per session.  Please contact Maria Fisher on 01249 782417 to reserve testing.   As usual the circuit are currently putting together a prize fund and special awards for the Carnival, which always proves to be a popular way to round off the Formula Ford season at Castle Combe.

Always a highlight at the close of the season is the Formula Ford Carnival where contenders from all over the UK and sometimes as far afield as Australia, come to measure their talents against the locals who have perfected their knowledge of Castle Combe in the Circuit's own FF1600 Championship.

As often as not, the event produces an unlikely winner, but with guaranteed, nail biting action throughout the heats and final.

Nowhere will you witness such closely fought single seater competition, the leading pack often inseparable for the entire race.

North West Anglesey Double Header: Four Races, Four Different Winners, Formula Ford Racing At Its Best!!

words by Matt Hawkins

Rounds 7 and 8 of the Creative LED Solutions Club Formula Ford North West Championship took place at the Anglesey over the weekend of 8/9 August.  While the grid sizes weren’t the strongest the championship has seen during 2009, those who didn’t enter certainly missed out on an excellent weekend’s racing.  The four races provided four different winners, with entertainment throughout for the drivers, marshals and spectators alike.  Apart from a brief shower during Sunday morning’s free practice, dry and warm weather was very much the order of the meeting.

In the Post-89 category, it was a welcome return to the North West for the 2004 champion, Steve Roberts.  Running the only Class B car in the field, expectations were high of Roberts’ performance.  Unfortunately a broken bolt in the rocker assembly would put the Whitchurch driver out of the running in Saturday’s race.  It was Medina Sport’s Neil Patten who shone in this race, taking a faultless pole position to chequered flag victory.  Behind him it was the battle for second that provided the real entertainment, with Martin Short and Doug Crosbie never more than a few inches apart for the entire race.  It would have been very easy for there to have been contact between the pair, but there was no such incident, with full credit to both drivers for the duel being conducted in the very best racing spirit.  Short hung on to take second place ahead of Crosbie.

Patten’s Sunday race was unfortunately a rather different affair to the previous day.  He started badly and dropped back down the order, and then as he began recovering through the field he was faced with a spinning Simon Kinsey coming out of the final corner.  Rather than hitting Kinsey, Patten took avoiding action, resulting in himself spinning and colliding heavily with the pit wall.  Fortunately the driver was unhurt, but his race was over.  At the head of the field, former champ, Roberts, put in a virtuoso performance, disappearing into the distance from whence he would not be caught.  However, once again it was the battle for second that would provide the real action.  Again Short and Crosbie were in thick of things, but this time they were joined by John Murphy and Neil McArthur to make it a fantastic four car train.  And once again Short held his nerve to keep them all at bay to make it a brace of second place finishes for the weekend, with Crosbie also taking the third step on the podium for the second time.

The early stages of Saturday’s Pre-90 race gave a spectacle you won’t see very often at Anglesey; a group of drivers coming three abreast through the final corner in a battle for the race lead!!!  John Farrell just got the advantage over Nigel Thompson and Ian Parkington in that particular moment.  However as the lead three battled, it allowed the chasing pack to close right up behind them, giving a seven car nose-to-tail group that passed the start/finish line closer together than the commentator had time to call out their names.  Parkington worked himself to the head of the group, while a spin at Rocket for Farrell dropped him back down the running order.  Thompson tried every which way he could to find a way past Parkington, but the Class D man drove an excellent defensive race to take the win.  Lee Hannam finished third after a very strong performance, the Cheshire airline pilot clearly much happier having switched from a Van Diemen back to his previous Reynard chassis.

At the start of Sunday’s Pre-90 race, it was once again Parkington who quickly got himself into the lead.  However on this occasion, Thompson had no intention of letting him get settled there, and took over at the front with a wonderful out-braking manoeuvre into the Rocket complex.  Parkington was desperate to get back on terms, however by pushing hard he found himself running wide onto the grass through Church, letting both Farrell and Hannam through in the process.  Farrell then made his bid for the lead with a brave and successful attempt round the outside of Thompson coming down the Corkscrew.  However keeping Thompson behind you is a tough task for any driver, and the Midlands’ driver soon regained the lead.  The leaders’ battle once again closed the pack up behind them, and it soon became a close five car train at the front, all the way to the flag.  Thompson held on to take the win, ahead of an ever improving Farrell, and Hannam, who was delighted with his second third place finish of the weekend.

The Prostate Cancer Charity Tour Ride in Stoke-on-Trent!
Formula Ford colleague Paul Mason goes for the yellow jersey -

will he be the Lance Armstrong of Club Formula Ford ?

Hello Everyone,

As you can see from the message below I will be riding a stage of the tour of Britain on the 6th September this year in order to raise money for the prostate cancer charity.

The stage is 145km ( approx 90 miles) heading out towards the peak district (very hilly) so I'm hoping to complete the course in one piece and before it goes dark! Which will be a challenge as I have never done anything like this before.

Any donations can be made by clicking the link below and will be greatly appreciated.

Malvern springs to Oulton Park Post-89 debut appearance win, while Parkington takes faultless lights to flag Pre-90 victory

On Saturday 11 July, Oulton Park hosted Post-89 and Pre-90 Club Formula Ford races that were rounds of both the Creative LED Solutions North West championship and the Webcon UK National championship.

Qualifying for the Post-89 field made it clear that the battle for the win later in the day was going to be a two horse race between rising stars, Rory Butcher and Scott Malvern.  Butcher is the more experienced Oulton Park driver, and he used his knowledge to lead the field away from pole position at the race start.  His lead looked to be secure after Malvern in second place out-braked himself and dropped back into the clutches of the following pack.  Nonetheless, Malvern showed great composure to regain his concentration and reel in Butcher.  At half race distance, Malvern made his move and grabbed the lead.  In return, Butcher kept on the pressure all the way to the chequered flag, but Malvern drove a very impressive series of defensive laps to take a very credible win on his first visit to perhaps the most technically challenging circuit in the country.  Third step on the podium went to David Grady, who finished less than a second behind Butcher at the race finish.  Elsewhere in the field, the best of the entertainment was provided by a cracking battle between new-comer, Benji Hetherington, and long time racer, Simon Kinsey.

In the Pre-90 category, the day belonged to a faultless Ian Parkington.  The Lancashire driver put his class D Reynard on pole with a superb qualifying lap, ahead of a pack of much newer class C cars.  When the red lights went out at the race start, Parkington took full advantage of a poor start by his championship rival, Nigel Thompson, to open up a lead at the head of the field.  He built on this advantage in the laps that followed and would not be challenged for the rest of the race; leaving him to take a fully deserved race win.  Thompson recovered from his slow start to finish second on the podium, while the ever hard charging Justin Dawkins had a very eventful race; including a trip onto the grass, a spin and an exceptionally close wheel-to-wheel battle with Andrew Xavier as they crossed the finish line.  Dawkins UCLAN teammate, John Farrell, took the third step on the podium.  Once again the Pre-90 field also proved you don’t always have to watch the leaders for a great race, with a fantastic battle for ninth place provided by Lee Hannam, Mike Stewart, Stuart Dix and the returning Ian Ellis.

The next round of the North West championship is a double header meeting at Anglesey over the weekend of August 8/9, while the National championship has a break of just one week before moving to Knockhill in Scotland on July 18/19.

TEAM RED and BLACK PODIUM LOCKOUT at SILVERSTONE

After a fraught Saturday with two of their three drivers becoming embroiled in first lap incidents, Sunday provided the perfect antidote with the team finishing 1, 2, 3 in the Webcon UK Club Formula Ford Pre90 Cup race for a podium lockout. Team leader - and reigning champion - Nigel Thompson [centre] eventually overcame 16 year old Portuguese Pedro Matos to take the spoils. This was a superb performance by the youngster in only his second ever car race meeting. Equally impressive to the Formula Ford fraternity at Silverstone was the third place finish by Kevin Donnelly. Not the drive itself, rather the fact that the team actually managed to repair the Van Diemen RF88 to get it on the grid at all.

30 June 2009   Silverstone CFF NW report from our own Matt Hawkins

Rory butchers the Post-89 field while Dawkins dominates in Pre-90

June 27 saw Silverstone stage round 5 of the Creative LED Solutions Club Formula Ford North West championship, the event also counting as a round of the Webcon UK National Club Formula Ford championship.

A strong 22 car field was signed on for the day’s Post-89 event, and right from the word go it was Scottish youngster, Rory Butcher, who dominated the proceedings.  In qualifying, Butcher put his 17 year old car on pole with a time nearly half a second quicker than his closest rival, Scott Malvern.  Come the race, and Butcher carried his impressive performance on with a virtually faultless lights to flag victory, leading the rest of the field by close to seven and half seconds at the end of the event.  Malvern, clearly not in the best of health on the day, took an impressive second place finish having kept Butcher firmly in his sights for much of the race.  The third step on the podium went to a delighted Matt Rivett, who has clearly lost none of his touch in a Formula Ford, despite a very limited number of outings during 2009.  A mention must also go to Doug Crosbie, who after various technical problems in qualifying started nineteenth on the grid, but worked his way through a high quality field to finish a very respectable eighth place at the chequered flag.

Two incidents on the opening lap of the Pre-90 race saw three drivers out of the event, with a fourth subsequently running two laps down after a trip to the pits.  Contact between Pedro Matos and Matt Ridge at Becketts saw the latter air-bourne in spectacular style, while at the following corner, Kevin Donnelly leapt over the back of Nigel Dolan’s car in an equally dramatic incident.  Once the dust settled it was pole sitter, Justin Dawkins, who set about building himself a very comfortable lead with a seemingly endless stream of consistently fast laps.  This very professional drive rightly earned Dawkins the win, but behind him the most watchable battle of the race was the hard fought duel for second between Nigel Thompson and John Farrell.  The pair swopped places throughout the race in an incredibly close, yet clean and fair, encounter that must be applauded.  At the chequered flag it was Thompson who just snatched the second step on the podium by less than a tenth of second.  The class D result was a popular one in the paddock, with Stuart Dix finishing ahead of Barry Thompson and Mike Mullins.

Both the North West and the National championships now have a two week break before moving to Oulton Park on July 11.

Mallory Park - Edwina Overend Trophy

Info for Club Formula Ford - 26 July 09

The 6th running of the “Edwina Trophy” race takes place on 26th July 2009. The first race was organised in 2004 to remember Mrs Edwina Overend, the former Managing Director of Mallory Park Motorsport Ltd.

It was in 1982 that Edwina and her husband Ron re-opened Mallory Park for racing again following it’s closure at the end of 1981 and then the sale of Mallory Park to motorsport legend Chris Meek.. Edwina and Ron were then later joined by their son David Overend and for over twenty years ran the circuit turning it into the legendary “friendly circuit”.

The race winner will be awarded the annual trophy by the Overend family. The trophy has been awarded twice to Gavin Wills and once to Ed Moore, Peter Daly and David Grady, all of whom have won the Star of Midlands championships at one time or another. Will this year see a new winner?

NW Championship Round 4

Oulton Park sees Simon Kinsey make it two on the bounce in Post-89, while Stuart Jones makes a triumphant return in Pre-90

Round four of the Creative LED Solutions Club Formula Ford North West Championship on 25th May saw the competitors back at Oulton Park for a second consecutive meeting, but stepping up to the full International circuit configuration.  A rare Bank Holiday Monday outing for the championship saw an encouraging entry of 44 drivers signed on to entertain the healthy crowd in the fantastic May sunshine.

In the Post-89 event, Simon Kinsey put his Van Diemen RF01 on pole position.  The Cheshire garage proprietor then showed his vast experience in the category with a faultless lights-to-flag victory.  The second win in a row for Kinsey moves him comfortably to the top of the championship points table.  Behind Kinsey, the best battle of the race was undoubtedly the wheel-to-wheel duel for second between Neil Patten and former three-time Champion of Oulton, Mike Bennett, having his first outing of the season.  The spoils finally went Patten’s way, leaving Bennett in third but with the consolation of a class win.

The grid of 29 Pre-90 Formula Fords made for a fantastic sight as they sprinted away from the grid and around the circuit on their opening lap.  It quickly became clear that the battle for the lead was going to be between championship leader, Nigel Thompson, and Justin Dawkins in the UCLAN Reynard FF89.  Both drivers are known for their hard-charging, committed style, and an excellent dice looked set to ensue.  However, contact at the Shell Oils Hairpin would unfortunately put both drivers out of the race.  This left the battle for the lead between Ian Parkington and former championship front runner, Stuart Jones, having an outing in David Bailey’s 1989 Reynard.  The race went all the way to the chequered flag, with Jones just snatching the win by half a car’s length.

Round five of the championship sees the competitors making the trip to Silverstone over the weekend of 27th/28th June, where they will be using the National circuit configuration.

SCOTT and SCOT SHARE SNETTERTON SPOILS3rd May 2009

Bank Holiday Sunday at Snetterton saw some lap record breaking racing in the Webcon UK Club Formula Ford in association with Richard Egger Insurance pair of championship races.

The Snetterton lap record had stood to Peter Dempsey since 2005 at 1m 14.8 sec. After 25 minutes of qualifying, the top three on the grid had all bettered this mark. David Grady lined up third in his Unitec Motorsport Van Diemen RF02 on 1m 14.506 sec. In second spot was the Cliff Dempsey Racing / Lamberhurst Corporation / ScanDoc / Baines of Ripon / Es Ray GSR08  piloted by Scott Malvern on 1m 14.063 sec. Annihilating them both though was the QServ / Paramed uk Van Diemen RF92 of Knockhill based Rory Butcher. The young Scot flew round Snetterton's 1.952 miles in a staggering 1m 13.747 sec at an average speed of 95.28 mph.

As the field lined up for the first of the two races, Grady was missing, having encountered engine problems on the Green Flag lap. An engine change would see him back out for the second race. From the start, Butcher and Malvern pulled out a lead from the squabbling pack behind. Having officially broken the lap record on lap five, it all went wrong for Rory on lap seven when his gear box failed and he had to watch from the sidelines as Scott made the season score two to one in his favour. Ian Gough in his Gough Racing / Oldfields Autos of Southport Ray GRS07 and Matt Shawyer, in his Gulf liveried Century Motorsport Van Diemen RF90 took the final podium spots. The top six was rounded out by Adam Quartermaine, Team West Tec Van Diemen RF99, Matthew Parr, Unitec Motorsport / Future Webs Van Diemen RF01 and Benji Hetherington EOS Productions / Century Motorsport Ray GSR08.

For the second race, Grady with his replacement engine and Butcher with a Century Motorsport sportingly loaned and Medina Sport fitted gearbox would line up at the rear of the grid. After just one lap, Butcher had carved through the field to run 8th, with Grady 10th. These positions had improved to 3rd and 6th, when the Safety Car was called out on lap six. A half spin by an unidentified car had caused an avoidance collision at Riches between Cormac O'Neill's Cliff Dempsey Racing / Moston Ray GSR08 and Dave Connor's Team West Tec Van Diemen RF03. When the race resumed. Butcher was on a charge and quickly saw off Gough to take 2nd, a move repeated by Grady three laps later, demoting Merseysider Gough  to fourth. Over the closing laps, Rory was all over Scott like a rash and eventually he took the lead on the penultimate lap to score a very popular win. Butcher further lowered his lap record to 1m 14.210 sec. Behind Malvern, David Grady took a satisfying podium spot after his earlier problems. Gough, Parr and a smokey Shawyer [he pulled off after the flag] completed the top six.   In the concurrent National Pre90 Cup, Andrew Xavier took a pair of wins in his 08 Direct Van Diemen RF87 from racing debutant Josh Barnett in his Saab City Van Diemen RF88. Josh was very impressive all day and kept Xavier honest, even taking the satisfaction of fastest race lap in race two.

The Webcon UK Club Formula Ford Championship now moves to Wales on 16th / 17th May, when Pembrey is the venue for rounds 5 and 6. Hopefully some Castle Combe regulars will make the short journey over the border to sample National level Formula Ford.

27 April 2009

Club Formula Ford Northwest Championship Round 3

Reigning Pre-90 Champ Thompson continues his perfect season start, while long time competitor Kinsey grabs Post-89 win

Round three of the Creative LED Solutions Club Formula Ford North West Championship took place at Oulton Park on 25th April.  In a new venture for the championship, the day’s Club Formula Ford races were part of the Time Attack “Modified Live” show.  The competitors put on two very entertaining races for the huge crowd, with the single-seaters generating plenty of interest amongst the general public visiting the paddock.

2008 Pre-90 champion, Nigel Thompson, made it three wins out of three for 2009 with a superb lights to flag victory.  A sticking throttle in his Van Diemen RF88 did allow championship second place man, Ian Parkington, to close in the latter part of the race, but Thompson held his nerve for the win.  Third place finisher, Justin Dawkins, provided without doubt the most entertaining drive of the day.  The Worcestershire driver was a late entrant, but lacked no commitment in using all of the track and a bit more besides!!

It was a smaller field for the Post-89 event, but nonetheless many around the circuit commented on the quality of the race.  Veteran competitor, Simon Kinsey, had earned himself pole position earlier in the day, and then threw away the advantage with poor start in the race.  However he showed typical zeal to quickly get back to the lead of the race, and to stay there until the chequered flag.  Second and third place finishers, Chris Chisnall and Martin Short, had a cracking duel in the second half of the race, with some compelling overtaking manoeuvres through Old Hall corner.

Round four of the championship takes place in just under a month’s time, back at Oulton Park.  The competitors move from the Island circuit layout to the full International circuit for the meeting on Bank Holiday Monday, 25th May.

BRAVE RETURNS FOR FRANKLIN and MARSHALL

Just 12 months ago Dave Franklin suffered a monumental accident at Anglesey, which left him with a broken neck. Dave spent 12 weeks in a head and body brace [screwed into his skull and known as a 'halo'] to allow the fracture to heal.   Just one week later at the pre race test day for the 750 MC Formula Four meeting at Brands Hatch, ex Club Formula Ford driver David Marshall suffered identical injuries and also spent 3 months in a screwed to the skull 'halo', although annoyingly to Franklin, the Marshal version was more hi tech and streamlined.   Club Formula Ford is delighted to announce that Dave Franklin made a successful racing return last weekend at Oulton Park. His Reynard 89F has been painstakingly rebuilt since his accident and Dave finished sixth in the highly competitive Pre90 division of the Creative LED Solutions North West Championship, with fourth fastest race lap, proving he has lost none of his flair and pace.   Two weeks ago, young Dave Marshall made his racing comeback at Castle Combe over the Easter weekend, scoring a podium Whilst the older Dave was at Oulton last weekend, Dave Marshall returned to Brands Hatch - the scene of his accident at the corresponding meeting last year - and scored his first ever race win.    Club Formula Ford wishes to congratulate both Davids' on their bravery and successful comebacks.

FORMULA FORD DRIVERS IN TIME ATTACK / MODIFIED LIVE / DRIFTING MEETING

In the Drifting element of last weekend's Oulton Park extravaganza, there was a thirteen year old competitor. MSV insisted that - due to his age - he had to be accompanied by a qualified ARDS Instructor, or he couldn't take part. Step forward Dave Franklin, who got 'drifted' from Clay Hill to Cascades - in the reverse direction - many times in two one hour slots. The bloke must be mad, but well done Dave for stepping into the breach.   Meanwhile in the Time Attack part of the meeting, the winner of the class for the fastest cars was none other than Chris Ward. Chris was driving an Impreza and these things were lapping the Island Circuit quicker than the British Touring Cars lap record. Long time supporters of FF1600 in the North West will remember that Chris was Champion of Oulton in 1993.

16 YEAR OLD PORTUGESE DRIVER JOINS THE CREATIVE LED SOLUTIONS CLUB FORMULA FORD NORTH WEST CHAMPIONSHIP.

Last weekend's Creative LED Solutions North West Championship race saw Team Red and Black running a third Van Diemen RF88. Alongside Nigel Thompson and Kevin Donnelly was a sixteen year old Portugese driver Pedro Da Fonseca Araujo Matos having his first car race after some karting back home. As Alfredo - his pround father - looked on with admitted nervousness, young Pedro proceeded to steadily impress all day, qualifying midfield and finishing 11th overall and 8th in class. Pedro is already looking forward to the next round on Bank Holiday Monday 25th May at Oulton Park.

ANGLESEY SEASON OPENER

Butcher and Malvern share the Post89 spoils, whilst Thompson bags a Pre90 brace

The opening rounds of the 2009 Creative LED Solutions North West Club Formula Ford Championship took place over the 4th / 5th April weekend at the Anglesey Race Circuit. These races were also the first qualifying rounds in the 2009 Webcon UK National Club Formula Ford Championship.

After two days of closely fought on track battles, the honours in the Post89 division were shared between Rory Butcher and Scott Malvern. Scotsman Butcher won the Saturday encounter with Malvern 0.393 seconds adrift after twenty minutes of breathtaking racing.  The following day a repeat of the previous days encounter took place, but this time it was Malvern who had Butcher fastened to his gearbox. David Grady took third, with Benji Hetherington in fourth on both days.

In the Pre90 division, there were a pair of first time polesitters in Bruce Evans on Saturday and Kevin Donnelly on Sunday. Bad luck struck both in the races, with Evans the victim of a first corner accident on Saturday and Donnelly an early retirement with mechanical problems on Sunday. Through it all came Nigel Thompson to secure two wins. Ian Parkington and Nigel Dolan rounded out the podium on Saturday with John Farrell and Parkington filling these places on Sunday.

The North West teams reconvene at Oulton Park in Cheshire on 25th April for Round 3 of the 2009 Creative LED Solutions North West Club Formula Ford Championship, whilst the National contenders have a further week to wait until the 2009 Webcon UK National Club Formula Ford Championship third and fourth rounds take place at Snetterton in Norfolk on 2nd / 3rd May.

Forward a request in writing at least 5 days prior to the event (failure to comply with this could result in requests being declined) to Diane Hardy (Tel 01332 819507 Email Diane.Hardy@donington-park.co.uk Fax 01332 814411 Diane will then send out an “In Car Camera Request Form” which should be completed and returned to her. On receipt of the completed “In Car Camera Request Form”, Diane will complete and forward an “In Car Camera Authorisation Form” to the competitor, which they should submit to the race officials on arrival at the circuit.

REGULATION APPROVAL BY FORD MOTOR COMPANY

At a meeting convened today, it was agreed by Ford Motor Company with immediate effect to incorporate the following additions to the Ford Technical Regulations for Kent Engine.

Under Engine Regulation

Option: The fitment of alternative crankshaft - SCAT crankshaft which will carry a Ford approved unique identity.

Option: Fitment of alternative con rod bolts.

Option: Fitment of shim to allow adjustment for 'tappet'(this allows where heads have been continually skimmed to the point that original tappet clearances are no longer possible).

The SCAT crankshaft will be imported by Don Hilton's FFI and will carry a unique identity.

Any competitor who has an engine which has already had a SCAT crankshaft fitted and not sourced through Don Hilton/FFI/Sky Ford shall forthwith notify the Championship Manager, Kevin Shortis and no later than 31st January 2009. This will be noted by Eligibility Scrutineer/ BRSCC Chief Scrutineer and on the first occasion that that engine is dismantled for any reason then this fact must be communicated to the Championship Manager in order that the crankshaft may be given its own unique identity.

Date amendments

To overcome a serious clash of dates which saw both National and Northwest rounds coinciding on 12 September 2009, please note that the Post 89 class which should have been racing at Oulton Park on 12 Sep will now revert to the earlier date of 15 August and the MS rounds at Brands Hatch will all now take place on 16 August 2009. This change should now ease the burden on both drivers and teams who are committing to Club Formula Ford National/Northwest/Midlands-South.

The power of these pages and Autosport International

The item shown below was placed on 22 December last and Automech report a surge of interest from budding Formula Ford drivers and they have plans to expand their Club Formula Ford team to accommodate the competitors.

Early indications for 2009 seem to be flying in the face of the general mood of the country. Motorsport survives and excels. So much so that the Defence Industry visited the Autosport Show and several MIA members found themselves signing up to deals with the military; many of these very lucrative. Many companies are quite bullish about motorsport for 2009.

Medina Motorsport report a full order book for their drives for 2009. Good news indeed.

CHRIS CHISNALL WINS OUTRIGHT AT ANGLESEY 30TH NOVEMBER

Automech Motorsport undertook the preparation of Chris Chisnall’s Van Diemen RF00 Formula Ford prior to the Anglesey meeting on the 30th November.

After sorting out many problems with the car, Chris went on to take a fabulous outright win and fastest lap finishing 8.55 seconds clear of the rest of the field.

Dave Fairclough from Automech said “Hopefully we can sort out a deal with Chris to do some more preparation and development on the car next year”, Dave is no newcomer to single seater preparation as he spent several years working for Chevron race cars in Bolton and has set up many single seater race cars past and present with great success.

2008 Formula Ford Festival

Kent final a triumph.

Sunday 19th October and the Indy track at Brands Hatch was bathed in sunshine as the full grid of Kent Formula Fords lined up for the all important Final. The race lived up to the hype and although a safety car intervention allowed the field to bunch up again, the remaining race was decided by a stylish display of racecraft by American Josef Newgarden. Running in his Cliff Dempsey Racing Ray GR07/08, the young 'yank' showed some fine form all weekend and in the final was largely out on his own. The other podium places were taken by two other great drives by Patrick McKenna in his Ray GR07 and the Club Formula Ford Champion Graham Carroll (3rd) in his Van Diemen FR90. The maximum 28 cars started the race and 21 were to finish.

This has been a high point in the Formula Ford calendar for 2008 and with such positive comments and intentions for 2009 expressed we are looking forward to some larger fields running in Club Formula Ford National, NW and MS.
